And now this man is on trial in Brampton for his murder.

Joseph Chang was described by Crown witnesses as an abusive and controlling boyfriend whose violence escalated from assault in 2016 to first degree murder two years later.

His former lawyer tells a different story.

After reading media coverage of the trial, lawyer Daniel Kayfetz presented himself to the defense as a “manna from heaven”, according to his current lawyer, Randall Barrs, to tell the judge alone that there was no a long history of domestic violence or animosity between Chang and Lewandowski.

Kayfetz represented Chang when he was charged with assaulting his girlfriend on July 23, 2016. He said Lewandowski retracted his statement to police and, in an email, insisted that they were both drunk when they got into a fight and she escalated the fight. by becoming “very aggressive” and scratching it. It was a neighbor who called the police, not her.

Lewandowski then sent another email to inform Kayfetz that she had left the apartment she shared with Chang. “I don’t like being there when he’s not there,” she wrote. “I miss him even more. “

After the charges were resolved with a peace bond, his girlfriend sent another email to confirm that she was giving her written consent to have “full communication and contact with Joseph Chang. Kayfetz said.

“The two got back together,” he said during the Zoom trial. She was his.

In February 2018, Kayfetz was representing Chang on drug charges and Lewandowski was scheduled to testify on his behalf. “She was his possible key to freedom in the drug case,” the lawyer said.

So it wouldn’t make sense to kill her. But Kayfetz said his client didn’t make much sense at the time.

On the night of March 3, 2018, Chang called him to tell him that there was a flood in his apartment, that he was not responsible, but that the Toronto police were looking for him. The lawyer advised him to wait and talk to them.

Kayfetz was in bed when Chang arrived at his front door, drenched and scared.

In a muffled voice, he confided that “they were going to kill him” and that “they” installed secret cameras in the screws of his drywall – so he took them all out and put them in a bucket of water. ‘bleach. “They” had also left two guns in her apartment and when he shot one into the ceiling, she burst a pipe and triggered the flood.

We apologize, but this video failed to load.

“It was so out of whack,” he said of Chang’s paranoid story.

Less than two days later, Lewandowski, 25, was gunned down in the parking lot outside her mother’s townhouse. She had managed to call 911 and identify Chang.

Kayfetz was in shock when his client called to say he was under arrest for murder, not least because Chang knew he needed his girlfriend if he was to get away with the charges of drug.

When he saw him in the cells, Chang was still whispering that “they” were going to kill him. Kayfetz said he didn’t know what to make of his story. And then a police officer told him that they found a bucket of bleach in Chang’s apartment – filled with drywall screws.

Now he was convinced Chang was suffering from some sort of mental illness and warned the prosecutor that the case could fall under the NCR – not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder. Even after being replaced, Kayfetz said he told his new lawyer – not Barrs at the time – and his parents that Chang needed a psychiatric assessment as soon as possible.

Chang’s cousin Grace Chung also insisted that he was “delusional” and needed help before the murder.

But she never believed he was capable of harming his girlfriend.

Lewandowski had sent him increasingly worried messages that Chang had avoided his calls on his birthday on March 2 and when he finally answered his door he threatened to shoot him in the head.

“I never thought she would be in danger. Never, ”testified his cousin. “If I had thought that, I would have warned her.”

The trial continues.
