“The take-home message was really that there is a significant impact between migraine and mental health on each other, and so it’s important that people living with this debilitating condition – migraine – understand that if they improve their mental health, they will have better results regarding their migraine and vice versa.”

Recently, the results of the Migraine and Mental Health Connection Survey were announced, with the data suggesting that the majority of migraine sufferers and their doctors believe there is a link between headaches and mental health issues. , and that they impact each other.1

The findings also suggest that migraine sufferers still face stigma, especially when it comes to their mental health. Conducted by the American Migraine Foundation and Biohaven Pharmaceuticals, the survey included responses from 1,100 people with both migraine and a mental health condition, and 302 healthcare professionals (HCPs) who treat neurological conditions. . The results showed that 91% of healthcare professionals and 67% of migraine patients believed that better migraine management was associated with better overall stress control and mental health.

Additionally, although two-thirds of patients believed it was important to discuss mental health with their healthcare professional, 60% of them themselves brought up the conversation during clinic visits, even though most wanted their healthcare professional to initiate the conversation. To learn more about the impact of this data on the community of migraine patients and the physicians who treat them, NeurologyLive® spoke with Lawrence Newman, MD, president of the American Migraine Foundation and author of the study.
