Everything you need to know about mental health problems

The birthday of famous painter Vincent van Gogh is celebrated as Bipolar World Day on March 30. Mental disorder is not talked about as much as other problems like depression, anxiety and PTSD.

Bipolar The disorder can be described as a mental state when the brain suffers from extreme changes in mood and energy, hampering the ability to function normally. These mood episodes can also lead to depression and stress, and the condition is also known as manic-depressive disorder.

Abnormally happy or irritable mood is classified as manic / hypomanic, while sad mood is classified as depressive. A person with bipolar disorder may have either of these episodes or be neutral, however, there is no specific trigger for these mood swings. It can happen in seconds or minutes. This is mentioned especially because people without bipolar disorder may also experience mood swings, but these are not very common.

Other symptoms of bipolar disorder include psychosis such as delusions, hallucinations, and paranoia. While the diagnosis usually takes place at the age of 25, the patient may begin to show symptoms in their teenage years.

There are mainly three types of bipolar disorder:

Bipolar I: At least one manic episode, where the person has had major hypomanic or depressive episodes before and after the manic episode. Found in both men and women.

Bipolar II: At least one major depressive episode, lasting about two weeks, as well as one hypomanic episode of about four days. More common in women.

Cyclothymia: Several shorter, less severe episodes of hypomania and depression.

In order to diagnose the seriousness of your bipolar disorder or to know in detail your condition, it is necessary to consult a psychologist or a psychiatrist, depending on the therapy used. An expert opinion is always better than self-analyzing your condition in order to receive appropriate treatment.

Those around people with bipolar disorder need to support patients and give them the confidence to overcome this ordeal.
