Dr. Tom Insel, former NIMH director and chief mental health officer, reacts to the rising tide of loneliness, which affects 35% of older adults, ahead of a Wisdo Health panel discussion

NEW YORK, September 6, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Dr. Tom Insell, one of the most recognized mental health leaders in the United States, considers the lack of community solutions capable of preventing a mental health crisis and anticipating a relapse after treatment, as one of the greatest challenges. for mental health on a large scale. The reason: record engagement rates with mental health services, accelerated by the rising tide of loneliness that leads to disengagement.

“Loneliness cripples mental health care,” says Dr. Insel.

Dr. Insel was director of the National Institute of Mental Health between 2002 and 2015. He will share his thoughts on how the epidemic of loneliness can be cured on a large scale on Wednesday September 14, 1-2 p.m. ET. The panel is organized by Wise Health.

3 in 5 working Americans suffer from loneliness[1]in addition to 35% of the elderly[2]. With its growing impact on health and medical costs, now more than ever we need to ask ourselves if loneliness can be “cured” on a large scale. And if yes, how ?

Dr. Insel is among the leaders and decision makers in the health sector who will discuss this issue live, alongside:

  • Jennifer Lance – Associate Director, Population Health Strategy at Humana, and
  • Teacher Dan Russell – Co-developer of UCLA-3 loneliness scale

Moderated by Wise Health Founder & CEO Boaz Gaonpanelists will discuss best practices for assessing and addressing social isolation and loneliness in adults, and their impact on medical costs and overall health.

The goal of this webinar is to provide attendees with a clear understanding of practical steps to take to “cure” loneliness on a large scale at societal and organizational levels.

The main topic addressed by each panelist is as follows:

Engagement as the key to improving mental health – In his book “Healing”, Dr. Insel describes lack of commitment as one of the biggest mental health problems. Can this trend be reversed on a large scale, and if so, how?

Importance of increasing health days and community resources – Humana’s Bold Goal initiative has been a leader in addressing the impact of loneliness and other social determinants of health. Jennifer LanceHumana, will discuss the Bold Goal initiative and Humana’s approach to addressing health-related social needs, provide highlights from Humana’s recent pilot project with Wise Healthand other new initiatives to raise awareness and combat loneliness and social isolation.

The four dispositions to fight against loneliness – Professor Russell will share his research on dispositions to combat loneliness, including major validated scales for measuring loneliness, such as the UCLA-3, which Professor Russell co-developed.

“We are thrilled that leaders of this caliber, who are working to improve the delivery of mental health care, have agreed to come together to share their thoughts on how the epidemic of loneliness can be cured at scale. According to Wisdo Health, it’s time to ask whether the epidemic of loneliness is curable on a large scale, rather than just trying to slow its spread,” shares Boaz Gaonfounder and CEO of Wisdo Health.

“Curing loneliness – and the financial health costs it entails – on a large scale is an ambitious goal, but it is also the only threshold, we believe, that can push us all to think more structurally about the best way to prevent our continued slide into disconnection. , tribalism and disease before it’s too late.”

The webinar is free and open to all healthcare leaders and business leaders interested in providing effective support to their employees.
