‘Alleged killer of Akwa Ibom job seeker is mentally ill,’ father claims

The father of Uduak Frank Akpan, the alleged killer of Iniubong Umoren, a job seeker in Akwa Akwa Ibom State, told the Uyo State High Court on Wednesday that the accused was suffering of schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder that causes people to interpret reality abnormally.

Uduak is on trial for the alleged rape and murder of the deceased at his father’s compound in April last year.

The defendant allegedly raped and killed Umoren after luring her with a fake job offer.

He buried the deceased’s remains in a shallow grave in his family home where the crime took place.

Mr Akpan, who was cross-examined by defense lawyer Samson Adulla, told the court that his son, who changed his statements at each hearing, was mentally ill.

He said: “I know that the 1st defendant (Uduak) has a mental problem and has visited the hospital twice in 2020.

“He suffered from a mental illness called schizophrenia and at the time of the commission of this offense the first accused was an outpatient at Uyo University Teaching Hospital.

“Mental disorder causes people to interpret reality abnormally.”
